Day Camp Lots of Fun
By Carol Dobson - Special Features Writer, The Chronicle Herald

Day camps help preschool children get ready for Grade Primary.

When the school bell rings on the final day of classes, the Bedford Academy building becomes home to the annual summer camp.

"The camp runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.," explains Bedford Academy's David Connolly. "The age range is from four years to 12. The program for the younger children is designed as an orientation to get them ready for Grade Primary in the fall.

"We're very lucky at Bedford Academy because we have our own 21-seater bus we use every day for field trips. There are so many fantastic locations to take the children within a few minutes' drive, so one day we might be taking them to walk the trail along the Sackville River or to the art gallery or for a tour of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography."

Connolly says the camp program offers a lot of physical activity, whether it's regular trips to the pool, hiking, or ' the gym at the Academy. There's also time devoted to fine arts, music, drama, arts and crafts, and using the academy's computer lab.

"We're noted for our level of supervision, Our councillors are second and third-year university students and many of them are thinking of choosing teaching as a career. Some of the councillors are actually recent education graduates who are using the summer to be councillors as an orientation to teaching at the Academy in the fall."
